A Fun Dance in the Light Portal

Be There Now Light Portal at the Fire Arts Festival 2009

People making music with recycled barrels and green lighting technology. What a concept!

Here are a few scenes from a recent showing of the Be There Now Light Portal.
Sorry about the blurry video, but the vibe is good.
It has been great to have people come into the sculpture, figure it out and share their smiles. I think it has been a great success.

Be There Now Light Portal

Welcome to the Be There Now Light Portal official blogsite.

Our Master of Ceremonies is Green Wiggle Guy, Artbot, Recycle Master, Comedian and all around Weirdo. He is made from metal shavings, a disc brake rotor, salvage steel scraps and a salvage stepper motor. Then souped up with a Stamp BS2 microprocessor and some custom made circuitry. He's a bit of an oddball but harmless.

My name is Patrick Scott and I make stuff. You can check out my sculpture at my official website: http://www.patrickscottart.com/

So, the light portal project currently under way will be an interractive light and sound sculpture which we are targeting for the 2009 Maker Faire in San Mateo this May. It has long been a dream of mine to make a sculpture that would transport the viewer into a new space filled with light, sound and a sense of community. I would like participants to be able to build this space by triggering sensors to change the color of the lights and add layers of sound. The greater the number of participants, the more dense the soundscape.

To realize this piece, I will be buillding on a previous piece, Immersion, and attempting to trick it out with some additional lights, lots more sensors, and interractive layers of sound. I will be teaming up with my friend James Bonnell to create the software and electronic control system so that viewers can build the soundscape as well as alter the light colors.

This is a photo of Irene and I in Immersion from our show at the Phantom Gallery earlier this year. It is sort of the close cousin to Be There Now Light Portal.

Be There Now will be a smaller but more complex version of this piece, hopefully to be shown at the Maker Faire in San Mateo this May.
